Coffee Station

The humble cup of coffee is getting a make-over. Hayley Baddiley from Denby gives us her top tips for designing your own barista style coffee station at home.

These days, it's more important than ever to find joy in the little things. And, during a busy day working from home or sorting your household chores, stopping to enjoy a high-quality, beautifully presented cup of coffee can feel like a real treat. By paying attention to the details, you can create a gorgeous coffee station right in your own home. Just follow my design tips below to make every cup of coffee feel special.

Choose the perfect space

You don't need to have a large kitchen to create your ideal coffee station, and often small, well-thought out spaces can look amazing with the right design. In modestly sized kitchens, a simple tray placed on your worktop can house all your barista essentials. If you've got the space, open shelving can add a stylish touch to your coffee station, while keeping everything in reach. For larger kitchens, a wheeled trolley or upcycled bar cart can look incredibly stylish placed in an empty corner. These can be moved around to your living room or dining table if you're entertaining.

Keep everything on display

If you want to create an Instagrammable coffee station, consider keeping all of your items on display to show off your stunning mugs and accessories. Extra items such as sugar, cocoa powder, and biscuits can be stored in beautiful jars next to your coffee beans, filter papers, mugs, and tools. Not only will this look impressive, but you'll also be able to conveniently grab and go. Consider jars and accessories that coordinate with your mugs, cups, and saucers for a cohesive and eye-catching look.

Get the right equipment

Creating a world-beating cup of coffee is easier than you might think, and you don't necessarily need to have a pricey espresso machine in your kitchen to get amazing results. A few simple pieces of equipment can help to elevate your standard cup, so consider investing in a coffee dripper or cafetière. Ceramic versions are a big hit with baristas, as they look stylish and retain heat very well. Most are also dishwasher safe, so they're easy to clean up afterwards.

To take your coffee to the next level, you might also want to consider a pour-over kettle. These have been specially designed with a long spout that allows for smooth and precise pouring for your drip coffee. They'll also look incredibly stylish alongside your coffee essentials.

Invest in well-made ceramics

Part of the experience of visiting a professional coffee shop is being served your drink in beautiful cups and saucers — and your cups can be more important than you'd think! Research conducted by Channel 4's Food Unwrapped has shown that a heavier mug can help improve the taste of your brew (Daily Mail). It's thought that we associate a heavier mug with a higher quality coffee, so consider investing in beautiful, handcrafted, and well-made ceramics to ensure your drink tastes every bit as good as looks.

If you tend to drink a particular type of coffee, then it’s well worth investing in specialist coffee cups that are exactly the right size and shape. Cups with a wider brim tend to make coffee taste slightly sweeter and are best suited for milkier brews such as cappuccinos and lattés. Narrower cups can make your coffee taste a little more bitter, so they're ideal for stronger coffees such as an espresso.
